Schools Out-reach Programme

School Reading Sessions

Assemblies

An assembly at the start of the school day is a good way to introduce Hari to the children. Our Reader can tell the children about Hari's World and Hari's friends and build upon anything which the school might have done in advance of the visit. All shouting Oops Hari! together in Assembly the children will know just what to do later when Hari actually does something silly!

Ask the creator

Children like to ask questions after the Readings. By raising this opportunity in Assembly children have the opportunity to develop questions before the Readings. Questions range from: ‘How did you come up with the idea?’ and ‘Why is Hari green?’ to ‘How long does it take to write a Hari book?’- the more Questions the merrier! Even better if the Children have had the opportunity to prepare Questions in advance of the Hari visit - on Safety topics related to their school work and/or the schools curriculum!

Class sessions

Classroom Sessions involve reading from Oops Hari! supported by a PowerPoint format where available. Hari's World is such a colourful and interactive place, we have found that by projecting the images children get more interaction and enjoyment from the sessions.

Infant Sessions 3-4 years (30 mins) These shorter sessions concentrate on reading ‘Oops Hari!’ and playing 'Hunt the Hazards'. We find that thirty minute sessions tend to work better for reception class ages with an optimum class size of thirty. If the Children’s attention span is good and the Teacher elects to extend the session to include more ‘Hunt the Hazards,’our Reader will be more than happy to do this. Book Signing as appropriate.

Junior Sessions 5-6 years (45-60 mins) These sessions allow for reading ‘Oops Hari!’ (‘Hari at Home’ for Second Readings), playing 'Hunt the Hazards', and Q & A time. The session can round-off with judging the Art competition (refer ‘Make the day work for you’). Book Signing as appropriate.

Junior Sessions 6-7 years (How a picture book is made!) (60-90 mins) Due to the literature requirement of the school's curriculum we are often asked to speak to the 6-7 year old Children about the processes of creating a children's book. After reading through ‘Oops Hari!’ (‘Hari at Home’ for Second Readings), playing 'Hunt the Hazards', and Q & A time we take the children through the key production phases of the book from concept development, story-line, Illustration and Printing to demonstrate what it takes to write and produce a children's book! Finally, if the Children have engaged in the Art competition the Reader can judge this and award a small prize - a Hari Bookmark perhaps. Book Signing as appropriate. The Reader will need to know in advance which of the additional elements you wish to include so as to plan these into the session.
